The Great Trent River Raft Race –

Rules Registration and Schedule V1.9.1

Event Date: Saturday June 23, 2018 (Rain or Shine)

Location: Union Point, New Bern NC

Captains Meeting: Friday 22nd 6pm at New Bern Chamber of Commerce Offices.

Captains: MUST attend the CAPTAIN’S MEETING. (Remember, a Captain is the person who registered the vessel. So each Raft Captain, Canoe, Kayak and SUP Captain must attend this orientation meeting)

If Captains can’t attend the 6pm meeting on the Friday, there will be a shorter Captain’s orientation meeting at 10am on event day at your designated launch site.

Event Day Racer Check-ins and Inspections:

Check-in and inspections for all rafts will be at Lawson Creek Park from 10:00-12:30 Tow boats will be available to take you to the starting line at Union Point Park.

Check-in and inspections for Kayaks/Canoes/SUPs will be at 10am – 11.30am at the small beach area to the right hand side of Persimmons Restaurant, in New Bern. After check-in racers will proceed to the starting line at Union Point Park.

All persons involved in the race will need to show ID and sign a waiver at check-in.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE

All entries must register before midnight on Friday June 22, 2018 or before entry slots are filled. Entries are on a first come first served basis, once the maximum number of registrants per race category has been reached, the registration form for that category will be disabled.

The Captain for each vessel must register and pay for the vessel online at our website. The vessel fee includes the Captain’s registration fee. Individual crew members must also register for the event and pay a registration fee. 

All participants must sign a GTRRR Release during registration at our website and a Waiver on event day. Proof of age may be required in accordance with our rules and regulations.

Craft Restrictions, Rules Raft Specs and Safety

RAFT RESTRICTIONS:

  1. The maximum size of the raft is 20 Ft long, by 8 Ft wide, by 10 Ft tall.
  2. No glass, Styrofoam that is not encapsulated , or empty containers that once held toxic materials may be used to construct your raft.
  3. No nails or sharp items may be used below the water line.
  4. All vessels must be securely lashed as not to fall apart during the race.
  5. All (coolers, etc) must be secured to the raft.
  6. All vessels must have a garbage receptacle (bags are allowed) secured to the vessel. NO TRASH IS TO GO IN THE RIVER.
  7. No motors of any kind are allowed.
  8. Crew members may use paddles, sails or human powered propulsion. If using a sail, please note the craft height restrictions.
  9. A race number will be assigned to each Raft, Paddle Board, and Kayak. Your number will need to be pinned to your life jacket/shirt or attached to your vessel in a easy to read location.
  10. All vessels will be inspected prior to launching. Main focus should be safety.
  11. All rafts must be of homemade construction.
  12. The minimum crew size for a pedal/paddle raft is 1. 
  13. Commercially manufactured hulls are allowed. You will race with the paddle rafts and will have a separate trophy for manufactured hull division.
  14. Inner tubes or inflatable devices are not allowed.
  15. Rafts should be no taller than 10 feet 6 inches. Minimum raft size must be able to support the weight of the crew.
  16. A raft’s deck must be securely fastened to a frame and the frame securely fastened to the hulls and or flotation devices.
  17. Marine rigging such as cleats & rope are acceptable.
  18. All sheet metal raw edges to be turned over or taped.
  19. Any protruding long bolts to be sawed off, filed, and taped.
  20. Please test your raft before the race.
  21. All rafts must be human powered and/or wind powered.

SAFETY

  1. All Raft entries should be equipped with a suitable anchor and line, and a suitable towline.
  2. Each participant must have a Coast Guard approved life jacket and must be worn at all times during the race.
  3. Each captain must review protocol for any members who fall overboard.
  4. All crew members should wear appropriate footwear to prevent injuries form submerged sharp objects.
  5. No animals allowed on any raft.
  6. All entries must display their competition number in plain sight and clearly visible at the finish line.
  7. All captains and their crew must remain on board their registered vessel for the entire duration of the race.
  8. All entries must run the entire course under their own power to be eligible for awards.
  9. All Raft entries should have a first aid kit.
  10. No glass containers allowed at any time.
  11. Each entry should have an adequate supply of drinking water on board for the crew.
  12. All entries should have garbage bags for their own trash.
  13. No water balloons allowed.
  14. Any one exhibiting unsafe behavior will be disqualified and could be banned from the event.
  15. No diving from any vessel or jumping into the water at anytime.
  16. All vessels must be removed from the river at the end of the day unless other arrangements have been made.
  17. Derelict vessels are subject to police action and/or fines.

CREW RESTRICTIONS:

  1. Only crew members who have registered online and have signed a waiver will be allowed to participate.
  2. Launch your vessel after the Capt Meeting and Inspections have been completed Raft Race staff will be on-site as early as 9am. Arrive early to fill out your waivers, or skip the line and download, sign, and bring with you.
  3. Crew members must be over the age of 12.
  4. Any participant under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
  5. Every participant must wear a properly fitted Coast-Guard approved Life Vest at all times on the water.
  6. No ALCOHOL is allowed on Rafts, Kayak, or Boards. – The entire route as well as the after party will be patrolled to curb underage drinking.
  7. A “Dry Bag” with towels is recommended.
  8. COSTUMES ARE ENCOURAGED.

All Crafts:

Race Course could change on race day due to weather conditions.

Our preferred route, subject to fair weather conditions: Start at Union Point, north to a bouy at the end of Broad St. Back through the start/finish line, through the Cunningham bridge and train bridge, around a bouy over toward the History Center, then around a bouy near the Trent River high rise bridge, then back to the start/finish line.
